Trend Talk: How to update your home for fall with harvest-inspired looks from JCPenney

It’s fall, y’all! With Thanksgiving just around the corner, JCPenney has debuted a beautiful harvest décor collection, allowing customers to update their homes for the season – and all at an incredible value. We sat down with Karen Wertz, home design director for JCPenney, to learn more about the season’s top décor trends and how to transform your home into a warm and cozy fall retreat, perfect for welcoming friends and family.

JCP: Karen, thank you so much for taking the time to talk with us today. Tell us more about the harvest décor at JCPenney. What can customers expect?
KW: I am so excited about our home décor options this season. Our big trend is “Autumn Farmhouse.” Customers can find the of-the-moment modern farmhouse trend with handmade, vintage inspired pieces that feel fresh and updated — think wooden signs and storage crates, window panes, check and plaid prints, galvanized metal, burlap fabric and more.

For that fresh-from-the-field look, pumpkins are still a key element for harvest décor, but white pumpkins add a modern feel. You’ll see white pumpkins in everything from designs on pillows and plates to whimsical pieces such as white pumpkin bowls and salt and pepper shakers.

The blue and white trend is still hot. This classic color combo translates easily into fall with blue and white pumpkins or autumn leaves. In fact, our most popular wreath has white and blue pumpkins – you better grab it before it’s sold out!

JCP: What can customers find to create a festive Thanksgiving dinner table?
KW: We have some great pieces to decorate your table that coordinate with our other tabletop collections without being too “matchy.” An appetizer or salad plate with an autumn design or a pumpkin bowl looks great layered on a white or off-white JCPenney Home dinner plate. Mixing in Thanksgiving-inspired serving pieces such as our JCPenney Home “grateful” serving platter and gravy boat or a turkey serving bowl also add a special touch.

Our decorative glass pumpkins, candle centerpieces and fall florals create a cheerful table setting perfect for Thanksgiving entertaining. I also recommend adding warmth to the table with gold or amber pieces – our Savannah amber goblets are a great option. Placemats, napkins and a tablecloth or table runner in a fall-inspired design or a check print help bring the whole look together.

JCP: What are the “must have” items that everyone needs to decorate their homes for fall?
KW: We have so many great pieces that it’s hard to choose. If I had to narrow it down, I’d say everyone needs:

  • Harvest wreaths: I love our selection of wreaths. They can be put up right after Labor Day and don’t have to be changed out until you start getting ready for Christmas — and they look amazing!
  • Turkeys!: We have a few different turkey offerings – a more whimsical turkey with dangling legs, a traditional turkey with wood and feathers, and a really fun welcome turkey for your front door. They all make great accent pieces and give your home a festive vibe.
  • Grateful crates: Our decorative crates are perfect for display and also great for storage! I love these pieces because they are larger in size and definitely make a statement. You can add a pillow, throw or greenery to these and have an impactful look in no time.
  • White vintage truck: This is a true farmhouse statement piece that’s been updated to a rustic white color for the season. You can put this on your mantle, on a table, by the front door – anywhere!

JCP: Anything else we need to know?
KW: To finish your harvest look, grab a new throw and decorative pillow. I love to pick up a couple of throws at the beginning of each season just to add the feeling of coziness to each room. This year, we even have a “Thankful” throw pillow with mermaid sequins. Customers can find these finishing touches next to our harvest statements in the home department.

Also, don’t forget a gift for your Thanksgiving host! Our charming kitchen towel sets are a great choice. Or get creative and bring a dessert or side item on a beautiful serving platter you can then gift your host.
