Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those in Puerto Rico affected by Hurricane Maria.
As a precaution, we proactively closed all seven Puerto Rico stores on Sept. 18 ahead of Hurricane Maria. We have since reopened our locations in Mayaguez at Mayaguez Mall, Ponce at Plaza del Caribe and San Juan at Plaza Las Americas Shopping Center with limited hours of operation. To aid our customers in their recovery efforts, we are offering a 50 percent off discount throughout the store along with an extra 50 percent off clearance items*. All other Puerto Rico locations remain closed as of this blog post, including:
Shopping Center | City | State |
---|---|---|
Plaza Centro 2 Mall | Caguas | PR |
Plaza Carolina Mall | Carolina | PR |
Plaza Del Norte | Hatillo | PR |
Plaza Palma Real Shopping Center | Humacao | PR |
We’ve been in contact with local leadership via satellite phone, who have confirmed that most of the island continues to be without power – thus limiting cellular service and other forms of communication. Nevertheless, our team is attempting to reach all associates to confirm their well-being. Stores will remain closed until power is restored, each building is deemed safe and associates can safely travel to work. The Company is not yet able to determine when additional stores will reopen.
Last week, we delivered containers of supplies to Puerto Rico, such as water and non-perishable food items, personal hygiene and cleaning products, batteries, generators and more. These are being dispersed to aid our associates.
Furthermore, from now through Dec. 15, we are inviting our customers to round up their in-store purchases to the nearest whole dollar and donate the difference to The JCPenney Foundation. Along with continuing its mission to support moms by helping underserved kids, The JCPenney Foundation will now be using a portion of funds raised to aid in major disaster relief efforts.
