JCPenney Receives Accolade for Inclusion and Diversity Efforts

JCPenney has been named one of the best places to work for women and diverse managers by Diversity MBA Media in its 15th annual ‘50 Out Front: Best Places to Work’ list of companies that have made progress in achieving outstanding inclusion and diversity.

JCPenney ranks 39th alongside the likes of Texas Instruments, L’Oréal USA, and Hilton Hotels & Resorts, all of which were ranked based on how they’re investing in international strategies to advance women and managers of people of color and create a sustainable culture of belonging and inclusion.

“Overall, the survey shows continued progress for diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts,” said Pam McElvane, CEO and publisher of Diversity MBA Magazine, in a press release.

JCPenney’s Ongoing Commitment

To JCPenney, inclusion and diversity is the journey of growth that we take together every day to ensure our customers, associates, and vendors of all backgrounds feel safe, valued, and respected. We are dedicated to educating, holding accountable, and investing in not only our associates, but also our customers and their communities.

As we continue to shape a more transparent and intentional Company, we commit to the hiring, development, and advancement of diverse talent. Exemplifying this commitment, JCPenney partnered with Global Management Consultant, McKinsey & Company, to participate in their Black Leadership Academy programs in 2020 and 2021. Seventy-five Company leaders enrolled in the McKinsey & Company Black Leadership Academy programs while more than 100 associates signed up for our internal ‘Be the Change Leadership Program.’ Participants in both programs engage in small-group coaching, online courses, and immersive exercises that enhance leadership, innovation, communication, and management skills. Opportunities like these are instrumental to building a pipeline of diverse leaders at JCPenney through focused career building and mentoring. JCPenney is eager to expand this partnership with McKinsey & Company later this year.

“As we continue to grow our Inclusion & Diversity commitments, we are especially proud to have received this top ranking for the second consecutive year. This recognition represents how JCPenney associates are leading the way in creating an inclusive workplace and shopping environment,” said Kevin Updegrove, sr. director, communications, talent acquisition, inclusion & diversity, philanthropy. “We strive to cultivate an environment where all associates and customers feel welcome and able to be their authentic selves.”
