Giving Back in Time for Back to School
Mental Health America (MHA), the nation’s largest community-based nonprofit dedicated to addressing the needs of those living with mental illness, leads on the cutting edge of new methods for tackling challenges young people face maintaining mental well-being.
This back to school season, JCPenney is proud to join MHA in advancing the future of youth mental health with a $100,000 investment in the next generation of community-based efforts.
JCPenney has a long tradition of investing in young people, through inclusive access to education, job readiness and health and well-being. With this investment in youth community-mental health leaders, we recognize the need to enlist all voices and perspectives in addressing one of today’s most challenging issues. Our $100,000 donation represents JCPenney’s commitment to helping young people do the work only young people can – reach their friends, peers, and classmates struggling with mental health.
– Andre Joyner, JCPenney Chief HR Officer and JCPenney Communities Foundation Board President
A portion of the funds will support 10 young mental health leaders—including high school and college students from various backgrounds, identities, and parts of the country—to participate in six months of leadership development, one-on-one-mentoring, community building, and networking. With these resources, the 2022 youth leaders cohort will envision, plan, and implement new mental health initiatives to address needs not currently being met. The balance of the funds will support 40 teens and young adults (ages 16-22) participating in the Our Future In Mind Advocacy Summit pilot, to build the skills, knowledge, and relationships needed to improve school-based mental health policies and to revise resources MHA offers to its far-reaching Affiliate Network.
“Mental Health America is proud to partner with JCPenney to continue developing the next generation of mental health leaders. The best and most practical solutions to problems we face in the current youth mental health crisis often come from youth themselves. JCPenney’s support allows us to work with youth to take those solutions from idea to reality.”
– America Paredes, Ph. D., Vice President, Partnerships and Community Outreach at Mental Health America
We look forward to sharing more soon about this exciting partnership launching in the fall.
